The performance of fusion devices and of future fusion power plants strongly depends on the capability and durability of plasma-facing materials and components under the expected operational conditions. This comprises the resistance to heat and particle loads, material and in particular thermo-mechanical properties, as well as the variation of those as a result of fusion neutron irradiation. These are all critical parameters, which need to be understood and tailored from atomistic to component levels. The 18th International Conference on Plasma-Facing Materials and Components for Fusion Applications addresses these issues.
